TESUQUE ELEMENTARY
School Addition
Pueblo of Tesuque, NM
1992
Spears Architects worked closely with the school community to program the facility, ultimately trading a new kitchen and a stage for a new library. This 10,000 S.F. project added classrooms, a library and gymnasium to a 1930's adobe structure. This addition was respectful of the Pueblo Revival styling of the original structure and historic setting of Tesuque village, while taking advantage of the low cost of a pre-engineered steel structure. The metal building structure and high ceiling was appropriate for the long span needed for the gymnasium.

Because the gymnasium shared common walls with the library and classrooms, special acoustical construction was used to eliminate sound transfer. Extensive use of daylighting / passive solar on the south side of the building was used. All rooms including the gym and restrooms have natural light.

Durability and low maintenance were given high priority. Although the building is a steel frame structure with gypsum board sheathing, impact-resistant plaster was used on the lower part of the walls to provide a durable surface.
