The client’s program called for two houses in close proximity; one for part-time use and the other for a full-time resident. The houses were required to provide privacy each from the other, yet be physically close. The owners have early twentieth century regional furnishings and art. They wanted the house to have a feel of the period without in any way being a simulation. They have an appreciation of things authentically New Mexican but not the current cliched Santa Fe style. The house is adobe, with amended mud plaster on the interior and natural mud plaster under the south portal. The floors are mostly limestone or smooth troweled concrete. The owners provided some architectural antiques including adzed beams to be incorporated into the design. The site is a thicket of native trees and shrubs which is beautiful but not particularly accommodating to outdoor use, nor to the client’s gardening interests. The east garden with its low wall provides an ideal environment for flowers and creates a splendid foreground for the views to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The east wing extends both north and south to shield the portals from the road noise coming from the east. To the west is a high-walled contemplative garden that provides privacy from a neighboring house.
