Based on design expertise and sensitivity to historic contexts, Spears Architects was chosen to design a new community stage in the heart of Santa Fe on its historic Plaza. We worked closely with city officials and many local interest groups to arrive at the final product. The stage is integrated into the very historic and public context of the Plaza and the surrounding buildings such as the Palace of the Governors. The 24' x 38' size of the stage was chosen to be large enough to be useful for performances, but small enough not to draw attention away from the many important elements that make up the most important public space in Santa Fe. Durable materials were chosen to withstand the elements and the regular interaction with the public, while a ramp was integrated into the design to allow for access by all. The dark colors of the steel skirting, columns, and copper roof allow the stage to tuck unobtrusively into the trees of the Plaza, while the overall design and detailing reflect a contemporary interpretation of earlier bandstands. The height of the roof of the stage was chosen carefully to allow unobstructed visibility to the important Palace of the Governors situated behind it. The stage is equipped with modern lighting and electronics to provide for performances.
